The periodontist is good and smart, he's all business. No bedside manners, but knowledgeable. His admin staff? SUCKS so bad that I refuse to see him just to not deal with them. If you want to see him, they'll find a way to bill you for crazy items AFTER the fact. Then, the staff calls you as if they were a collection agency. They're scary, really, really scary. My regular dentist called me the other day complaining about the staff. He (my regular dentist himself) was trying to solve an admin error he had made and the staff was hostile and rude. My dentist called right after suggesting that I try another periodontist that has staff easier to deal with, they've made my life sooo miserable that even if the dentist and the hygienists were #1 in the entire world, I still wouldn't go. Very sad. If I were him, I'd fire all of them, seriously. The periodontist is losing serious business because of them (my 2 implants worth $12K will be done somewhere else). It's either leaving or losing my sleep over them. Too bad the periodontist will never know this happened. I'm not the first to complain about this, I should have listened.
About Hygienist: Very nice, sweet and explains everything she does so you know what to expect. No complaints here. Too bad I won't be seeing them again either, because of the front desk staff.
I know this doctor: 1 year

Do not recommned this office. Dr. Kwan may be perfectly fine but his front office staff treats patients like they are doing them a favor seeing you. Confirmed my appointment for the wrong time, did not call to schedule the follow up, were rude when I called to ask why, and offered an appointment two months in the future because they were "too busy". On top of this they charge $100 for the preliminary (2 min) appt with the Dr. (The perio I ended up instead seeing did nothing like this). There are alternatives in the area with more professional staff.

Before I found Dr. Kwan in Oakland, I had consulted 12 dentists/periodontists. All of them said that because of severe bone loss, they could do nothing to help me. Dr. Kwan was able to perform root planing and scaling using the perioscope and ultrasonic scaler. Because I had been so traumatized by a periodontist in San Mateo, Dr. Kwan recommended conscious sedation. He also encouraged my spouse to be present for the procedure so that I wouldn't be anxious. His method of cleaning and disinfecting, accompanied by systemic antibiotics works. I have regained attachment and am growing bone.

Dr. Kwan is an excellent practioner, teaching his craft at UCSF, and is a concerned human being. One of his approaches to periodontic treatment is antibiotic material applied to the infected gum tissue, and his work is gaining acceptance. In other words, he's not quick to reduce gum tissue surgically. I have been his patient for several years, and I recommend him without reservation.
BY THE WAY, HIS OFFICE IS IN BERKELEY, NOT LAFAYETTE! ALL OTHER CONTACT INFO IS CORRECT.
