Unlike other oral surgeons, Dr. Ichikawa gave me a choice between general and local anesthesia, and he is willing to use only a local anesthetic in cases where other doctors will not. This avoids many risks, side effects, and inconveniences associated with general anesthesia. Also, local anesthesia is much less expensive than general anesthesia, which frees up insurance benefits for other work during the year.
That said, local anesthesia may not be for everyone. But if you have had previous dental work and the drills don't bother you, this is not bad. If you'd like to be awake but feel nervous, ask about a same-day sedative.
Assuming you are awake, Dr. Ichikawa will give you a play-by-play of everything he does during the surgery.
He also will allow you to inspect your tooth after it is removed, but you must ask the assistant just before the procedure begins; otherwise it is put into a disposal container with the teeth of other patients as soon as it is removed.
The only problem that I had during the course of my treatment was that (like many other doctors) Dr. Ichikawa was never in his office more than three days a week. This is only a problem if you will need post-surgical care, of course.

I underwent my implant surgery for my missing front tooth ( #9) in May 2007. After waiting for 5 months I just got my implant exposed and Dr. Ichikawa placed the abutment. Dr. Ichikawa was simply superb. I was very apprehensive about the whole idea of gettng surgery ( pain, complications , infection especially since I had my spleen removed ) but every thing went so smoothly. Infact after my surgery I took just a handful of over the counter Tylenol to cope with the pain. If I ever had to go for another implant I would *only* go back to Dr. Ichikawa The best part I liked is Dr. Ichikawa explains very clearly what he is doing and why. He is very very good at following up after surgery to make sure you are feeling okay and there is not much pain and bleeding.

I needed to extract my wisdom teeth. A friend recommended Dr Ichikawa to me. The surgery took 20~30 minutes and it was very smooth. Dr Ichikawa was very patient and explained everything in details. After the surgery, Dr Ichikawa placed follow up calls and asked about the pain and swelling. Overall, everything has been great.

Dr Ichikawa is the nicest dentist I've ever met!. He explains things thoroughly, and puts you at ease.. he is very honest and careful not to take on work he does not feel 110% confident about.
He is a very nice and personable man.
I highly recommend him to anyone who needs a great oral surgeon and a rare find!.
