Note: Dr. Ebbs is listed as having an office on 17th Street, but his office moved years ago, to 1234 19h St. Suite 100, Washington DC 20036 (phone 202-822-0700) I am terrified of dentists, but Dr. Ebbs is gentle and patient. Most importantly, I trust him to recommend procedures only when they are necessary. I've only had cleanings from him, but my husband has had crowns and fillings and those procedures went well. In the lobby they have a t.v. giving a hard sell for teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures, which is off-putting, but Dr. Ebbs has never tried to convince me to do anything. My only real complaint is that they don't take my HMO insurance plan, so it's more expensive than I would like it to be.

Do NOT go to this dentist. He caused irreperable damage to my front tooth when replacing a crown. And the reason for the crown replacement was due to his faulty work on a mouth guard, that turned out to be unnecessary. I still shudder when I think about what he did to me. He and his staff were completely nonchalant about the damage done and about sending me home with a crown that literally was falling out of my mouth and that I had to hold in place with my tongue for two weeks until the replacement crown was made. Note that it was falling out of my mouth, because he casually removed a part of the tooth that he shouldn't have.

About Hygienist: His hygienist was fine.

The best thing I can say for Dr. Ebbs is that they have a comfortable waiting room full of lovely leather couches and current magazines. They can afford this sort of thing because a teeth cleaning takes less than 10 minutes when performed by the good doctor. At first I thought this was a perk, because I'd never had cleanings go so quickly. But then I decided that really he just wanted to get through patients as quickly as possible and make bank.

About Hygienist: I came in to have a deep clean because my gums were looking bad, and the hygenist Sandra Johson REFUSED to perform the deep clean on me unless I agreed to a high-priced antibiotic treatment that would have cost me over $2000 out of pocket (insurance wouldn't cover it). I said I couldn't afford it, and she said that she wouldn't feel comfortable proceeding unless I followed that treatment. I went home and researched it and it turns out the treatment is only slightly better than a deep clean, with short term results. She never did call to check up on me, and I switched dentists. Incidentally, the periodontist I consulted said a deep cleaning was sufficient in my case. WDS was also rude when I told them I was switching dentists, and charged me $25 for my records. Avoid.

I went to Doctor Ebbs based on a recommendation from a friend who had used his office for a cleaning. It had been a while since I had any work done, so I knew that this was a long overdue visit. I was told that needed to have several cavaties filled and Doctor Ebbs performed the fillings. About two weeks later three of the five fillings fell out while a fouth chipped. Needless to say after having him re-fill my teeth I have not been back to his office.

I used Dr. Ebbs for several years with mixed results. He fitted me with a crown, but it came off twice in a short period of time despite gentle treatment. He is fine for routine cleaning. The office staff is generally very poor. Twice I showed up for appointments and no one was in the office. Dr. Ebbs is a nice guy, but you should be able to find a better practice.

Dr. Ebbs has an awful chairside manner (does not want to communicate what he is doing and why) He cares very little about giving patients what is best for their overall health and well being and more about making money with expensive treatments. My situation is not unique- my wife and a close friend also had bad experiences where he pushed expensive, unneeded and poorly executed treatments on them. In my case I needed a new prosthetic tooth from him, but he also convinced me to do a second, unneeded prosthetic tooth. He gave me porcelin veneers but I grind my teeth and both veneers have broken. One tooth broke twice already. He does not seem to know what he is doing and I will never go back to him again. He has caused me months of suffering and some pain because my teeth still do not feel right.

I had the worst dental experience I have ever had in the Dr. Ebbs dental office. The dental hygienist who cleaned my teeth was not in any way gentle, and to make matters worse she was rude and insisted on singing while she cleaned my teeth. Then I was made to sit in the dental chair for at least 15-20 minutes while I waited for Dr. Ebbs to examine my teeth. He said a few things to hygienist (none of which I understood) and then left me. No one even told me I was done and could go home! Then the "financial analyst" gives me this full-page estimate of the work I need done, which says my out-of-pocket costs are going to be more than $2,000. Yet at this point no one has even told me what work needs to be done, why, and how severe the issues are. Overall, I was very unhappy with the entire experience and am now looking for a new dentist.

I highly recommend Dr. Ebbs. I have been his patient for a few years now and have been very pleased. Great chair-side manner, great staff, very skilled and competent.

I do not recommend Dr. Ebbs. His facility, staff, and general demeanor are all adequate, but these niceties mask general incompetence. I received a root-canal from Dr. Ebbs which I believe was an unnecessarily aggressive treatment. As if this was not enough, only one of two canals was filled resulting in serious and very painful infection. All of the work done by Dr. Ebbs had to be redone by a more qualified dentist.

Dr. Ebbs is nice and puts his patients at ease. He is not overly aggressive and has never recommended treatment that I felt was unnecessary. He will also send you to a specialist if necessary rather than insist on doing work himself that others are more qualified to do. The big negative is his office policies. His staff has rebooked me with another dentist and didn't even tell me until I was in the chair, had been seen by a hygenist, and someone else walked in the door. In the waiting room I am subjected to a repeating 2 minute video for teeth whitening at such a volume that I can't hope to just sit and enjoy a magazine. Finally, they dropped my insurance and didn't tell me until I called and needed an appointment. I switched to Dr. Ebbs from another downtown dentist (who also dropped my insurance but at least let me know about it), and my out-of-pocket expenses went up considerably for the same procedure. He also tried to bill my insurance for giving me instructions on brushing, which barely even registered with me at the time.
