The nice reviews here are what helped my decision to choose Dr. Toppi. However, although his work was fine he had little patience for my 5 year old daughter who was scared and wiggly and didn't want him to work on her. They ended up sealing 8 of her teeth and because she was "too wiggly" they could only do two teeth at a time. This meant we had to go back 3 more times. After the first time they wanted to put her in a papoose and give her drugs to relax her and that just added to the bills and scared my daughter more. Even the receptionist seemed to lack the social skills that I would expect from a pediatric dentist office. My daughter is now afraid to go to a dentist because she thinks they will get mad at her again. Even though she made things difficult because she was afraid of being strapped down, in my opinion they should have had more patience with such a young child. We are definitely looking for a different dentist, hopefully one with a bit more empathy, kindness, and patience.

Dr Toppis is the BEST!!
He is SO kind, patient and puts the kiddies at ease. Very lucky to have him as my daughters DDS!!!!!! :)

Very bad bedside manner. Not in turn with his children patients and somewhat incompetent. Did not inform the parents well as to the procedures and basically did not accurately describe what was involved. Clearly alternatives to the sedative, etc should have been discussed. Also a rude individual. I would not recommend Dr. Toppi to anyone else!!!
However, the techicians (for cleaning, etc) and other staff are excellent !

We went to Dr. Toppi for a second opinion. Another dentist had said my five year old son needed a cavity filled, but it was so subtle that I could not see it on the X-ray. When we saw Dr. Toppi, he agreed that he could not see a problem and recommended against any treatment. In an age when some dentists recommend treatment to drum up work for themselves, I found this reassuring. (Another plus is that he is one of the very few pediatric dentists who is a preferred provider for Delta Dental Insurance in San Diego.)
My only criticism is that the assistant who took us back did not introduce herself to either of us. She was nice enough, but she seemed a little down. My son was confused as to what her role was (Is she the dentist?). Given that the patients are all children, I think it is a good idea to have assistants who are very cheerful and chatty with the kids and parents. Kids notice whether you smile and look them in the eye.

I just took my little girl in for her first ever appt. Dr Toppi was lovely, patient with a crying toddler and even more patient with a mother with LOADS of questions. He was great, very relaxed & friendly - all in all a good experience. Everyone in the office was friendly & helpful too.

Absolute angel. He was gentle, kind, caring. I am not a fan of dentists, but because of Dr. Toppi's ---chairside manner. I once again have faith in the dental community.
