I asked my own dentist for a recommendation of a pediatric dentist for my daughter, and his office recommended Dr. Ishioka.
I called and made an appointment for an exam, X-rays, and a cleaning and received a fee quote although the quote was open-ended depending on the results of the exam.
You can imagine my shock when Dr. Ishioka spent five minutes with my daughter, and then told me that I would have to make an appointment for the X-rays, exam, and cleaning. And one other thing: she said that we should consider having her molars sealed to prevent cavities and that would cost about $45 per tooth. If we had followed the good doctor's advice, my 6 year old daughter's first dental visit would cost approximately $650 which included a $90 fee for the first joke of a visit.
It occurred to me on the way home that dental care is going in the same direction as skin care. The real money makers for both dermatologists and dentists are the fees they can charge patients for cosmetic services. These services are generally not covered by insurance and they can charge whatever the traffic will bear.

Many neighborhood children go to Dr. Susan, but I hear other parents with similar complaints. I've had a luke warm experience. The receptionists can be unfriendly at times. It is near impossible to reschedule an appointment without waiting another 4-5 months. EVERY time my son visits this office he has at least 3 fillings that should immediately be filled...even though we brush, floss, etc. every day religiously. They even suggested immediate action on some natural indentations in my child's mouth that were not decayed at all. I would like to hear about some other possible preventative measures that we can attempt at home, rather than being shamed as I sit there. Basically, I always leave her office and feel like a bad parent. I'm so tired of hearing about the "sugar bugs" that are causing decay in my kid's mouth. (By the way, Dr. Susan, we don't suck on lollipops, drink sodas and eat cake all day. Please stop using this same conversation with us.)
I'm currently looking for another dentist for my children.
P.S. Her partner, Dr. Virata, is not very positive either. Gloom and doom.

Dr. Susan is a Human Being FIRST, then next; an incredible Dentist! She is so kind, she is SO REAL! My children actually look forward to their visits! The dentisty results are obvious. Beautiful teeth everywhere you look in that comfortable lobby of Drs. Pai and Ishioka (husband and wife team). The entire staff are kind, friendly and expertly professional. It is also obvious they all like each other and the "Family Feel" is instantly apparent. But don't come here, we are selfish about "Dr. Susan."

Dr Susan was the BEST!!!! I have never felt so comfortable in a dentist chair in my life! The doctor and her staff never made me feel embarrassed about my mouth, and believe me I have felt embarrassed about my mouth.. I'm an adult who needed braces, I went to her for 2+ years and recommend her highly!
