Read Reviews for Dr. Karl Lum
My wife and I have been going to him for years. He is professional and gets the job done. As another reader noted, when you sit in the chair you have a great view of the hills and fremont golf course so a nice distraction. He is always up for a conversatin and like any dentist they can understand what you are saying with your mouthful of dental cleaning stuff...somehow.
He is responsive if you are feeling discomfort, you just need to let him know. If you don't mention it to him, he does not know.
About Hygienist: No issue with the hygienist either, they are focused in getting you in the chair and getting x-rays, if needed.

Kind, but not very communicative. Can be more efficient (time is wasted waiting for appt, doctor to be ready, etc).
I have stayed with them since I really dont care who the dentist is as long as needed work is done and un-needed work is not done!!
I have an 8 year old daughter and she has been numerous times. They keep trying to put sealants on her teeth, but since she only has two permanent teeth, this seems to be a way to get more $$ from me and my insurance co.

I went to Dr. Lum as a new patient 6 months ago. I have to preface this review by saying that I have an extremely high tolerance to pain and have NEVER been afraid of going to the Dentist. I have had multiple surgeries so my opening point is that I am not a wimp. My experience with Dr Karl Lum was the WORST. Where I never had a fear of going to the Dentist, I do now. He has NO bedside manner. He does not care if he hurts his patients. He even has the nerve to get mad if you complain. I had multiple procedures and every time I went in there it was the most stressful and painful experience EVER. He is HORRIBLE at giving shots. You feel every single one of them. It is pretty bad when I have a root canal with Dr. Cliff and it was a piece of cake. It was so easy and so painless. Then I go back upstairs to Dr. Lum and it is like being in a torture chamber with much less painful procedures than the root canal. It is pretty bad when I would rather have 15 root canals than ever go back to Dr. Lum for ANYTHING. The final straw was my deep cleaning. His shots were unbelievably painful as usual. He was so RUDE that I never went back. I am sitting with half of a deep cleaning and I don't even care.

Dr. Lum is easygoing. The atmosphere is non-rushed and pleasant. The office is clean and orderly. Receptionists are on top of things. What I like best is that he does not recommend extra things for me to do to my teeth. My last dentist did and I never knew if it was totally necessary or only to make some extra money. Dr. Lum does the basics which makes it simple to go and maintain. I only wish he could also do things like root canals in the same office.

Dr. Lum is wonderful. He was easy to talk to relaxing to be around. The office is very clean and well taken care of. His chairside manner is wonderful.

Pros: Great view of the Fremont hills and Central Park.
Cons: Poor chair-side manner, i.e. stuff spalshing on my face and not wiping it off. Teeth are very sensitive after having seen him once and he also lacks precision with laser, resulting in gum loss. Never had teeth sensitivity problem with previous dentist of 10 years. Not very talkative. Unfriendly, moody front desk girl.
