Dr. Hayashi is a great dentist. He is professional, thorough, concerned and with a genial manner. His regular routine checkup procedure includes checking for jaw, clenching, soft tissue amnormalities--certainly more thorough and up to date than any other dentist i ever knew. He also clearly places a high priority on the comfort of his patients when more extensive procedures are needed: fillings, etc.
His staff is well organized, long term employees, and easy to get a hold of.

I feared the dentist visits. Dr Hayashi took that fear away from me. Painless procedures, very friendly, very knowledgeable, and he never pushed me into doing anything that wasn't necessary. He explains exactly what he's doing and what the cost is going to be.

Dr. Hayashi is amazing. He is super sweet and professional. Dr. Hayashi goes the extra mile (for instance checking jaw stress and the tongue for oral cancer with every visit). He takes gum disease seriously and will insist that you floss (and will catch you when you don't). You'll get a reminder call the day before the visit.
The only negative I would say is that one of his hygienists is a little too vigorous with the floss.
Overall if a visit to the dentist can be pleasurable, it can be found here.

Really cares about his patients and goes out of his way to ensure you know and understand all the alternative procedures. He has an excellent support staff. He is without question one of the best dentists I have had in my over 50 years of experience.

He's Great!!! My whole family (cousins, aunts, uncles, husband, grandmother,...) all go to him. He's thorough and careful and gentle.

He is the best dentist i've ever had. I needed a root canal and there was no pain at all!

I have been going to Dr. Hayashi for at least 15 years, and also served by Dr. Duffala for at least 7 or 8. My wife has been going to them for 6 years. My teeth are in excellent shape, which I attribute to them. When my wife or I have had some urgent needs, they've always been able to get us in for a visit as soon as we needed. Dr. Hayashi is big on preventative methods and taking care of the whole patient, not just filling teeth, which is probably why I haven't had any big dental issues.
In general, I wouldn't trust Web sites like this. Happy patients don't look for new dentists, and therefore would never find this site and write a review.

My wife andI have been treated at Dr. Jim's office for over twenty years and he is top notch. He is so good that even after moving to the east bay we still return for care. I have seen good, medium, and bad dentists and know what I'm talking about. He and his associate Gail Duffala rank among the very best. Dr. Gail is also a big Cal basketball fan who knows the game. She has a quick first step and will take your mouth to the hoop. I would be skeptical of any negative reviews because these are not only very competent people but also very good people. The same is true of his ancillary staff. Like attracts like. You will get good, competent treatment at his office. My name is not George Zimmer, but I guarantee it anyway!

My family has been going to see the Hayashi family for dental work since the 1940s when James' grandfather Terry had an office on the 7th floor of 291 Geary overlooking the cable cars as they crept up Powell. His staff is fantasitc and have been there as long as I can remember. James is patient and professional and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a dentist in San Francisco.

I have been with Dr. Hayashi for almost 20 years and he is now taking care of my husband, and my young daughter. I have been seeing Dr. Hayashi since I was a teenager. I have also referred a lot of friends to his practice. His staff are always very courteous and efficient. I still go to Dr. Hayashi for dental services even though I have moved out of SF for over 7 years. Dr. Hayashi has taken excellent care of my husband for two of his root canals. His office also offers Saturday appointments and his office partner, Dr. Gail Duffala is also an excellent dentist.
