Throughout the last five years, I have had about 10 cleanings with Dr. Uttermann and one tooth repair. Overall my impressions have been that he is knowledgeable but has little patience. The cleanings have been done very quickly but he answered whatever questions I had. My tooth repair was a different story. Dr. Uttermann and his staff communicated poorly during the 2 hour (!) , "minor" procedure to fix an old filling. Not only were they not gentle and patient, but they would frequently leave the room without saying anything. Moreover, while I should have asked in advance how much it will cost me, all my dentists in the past discussed the prices, given my insurrance, before the procedures. As a result, I paid significantly more than I expected and my tooth area was sore for two weeks. Overall, Dr. Uttermann is straight and to the point but I will not return there after their performance on fixing my old filling.

I have been going to Dr. Uttermann for cleanings the last two years. He is very quick and efficent with his cleanings.

Dr. Uttermann,
has done a number of different porcelain fillings on me and my family, using only the best technology. He has replaced all my toxic amalgam restorations with a all bonded porcelain material (cerec). Dr. Uttermann can do a very natural looking porcelain crown in one single visit ; the good news is that you don't need a temporary crown and no additional appointments for the same procedure.
My doc continues updating his practice and always attending his continue education classes with the Northern Virginia Dental Sociaty. Dr. Uttermann is a very friendly person and he makes all his patients feel confortable.

I have been a patient of Dr. Uttermann's for more than 15 years and cannot recommend him highly enough. He has done a full range of procedures for me, ranging from simple cleanings to root canals, crowns, implants, and extractions. All of the procedures have been done with the utmost care and concern for my comfort. I like the fact that he explains exactly what is being done during the procedure and never talks down to you. He's a heck of a nice guy and has a great sense of humor. That certainly helps when you are sitting in the chair.

Dr. Uttermann has been my dentist since 1995. In addition to routine cleanings and exams, he has done fillings, root canals, crowns and extractions for me. My mouth has presented him with a number of challenges, and he's always up to the task. His technical skills are outstanding, and he's really good at giving painless injections. He is always enthusiastic, and it's obvious that he loves his work.
Dr. Uttermann is very personable, but he tells it like it is, and his non-verbal communication might put some people off. More than once he's looked at something in my mouth and winced! Honest, but not reassuring, especially if you don't like dentists to begin with.
His office facilities are adequate, but certainly nothing fancy, and they're somewhat cluttered. He's had at least four receptionist/assistants since I've been going there, and some have been better than others. The current person is fine.

I just went in for a cleaning but was extremely put off by the office itself - very outdated, unkempt and not pleasant. The dentist was also abrasive and did not put me at ease. I will not be a repeat customer. Insurance process was not a problem though.

Went in to have tooth checked that was really bothering me, had gone to the only dentist I could find for an immediate appointment. The Dentist checked it and did xrays recommending me to see a general practise dentist for further treatment as it was outside his area of specialty. Giving me some pain meds to deal with things till I got to see someone.
Went to Uttermann since he was on the list of people accepting my dental plan. He was very quiet and did not ask many questions. I forced him to look at the xrays already taken and he insisted there was nothing he could do till he took more. He was rough handling during his inspection and xrays... plus was still very uncommuncative.
Next thing I know he tells me there is nothing he can do and I needed to get a root canal and bills me for the xrays. Since my plan already covered the first set they would not cover a redundant set.
Thanks for nothing. Needless to say I never went back.

Had a Cerec restoration done yesterday. Looks great. Feels great. Cheaper than a crown. Better than a crown. Far less hassle than a crown (see below for more Cerec info). Experienced, skilled dentist practicing first class dentistry (dont let the untidiness put you off) at a good price (and a good guy to boot.)

p.s. I have been a patient for many years and have had him do five fillings, two
gold crowns (before Cerec, and he took the time to do a more involved impression technique), and one root canal. Highly recommend.

Has been my dentist for 9 years. I consider him the best thing that ever happened to my dental efforts. Friendly, helpful, patient, gentle, fun and funny.

Has been my dentist for over 10 years. Great skill. Nice guy. Good work at a good price. Should maintain a little neater office for all the people who judge there dentist on his decor.
