Read Reviews for Dr. Jan Kooning
I was so absolutely displeased with the way Dr. Jan A. Kooning treated me while in his office. First of all, upon calling to confirm my appt, I was told, the day of, that I would need to come in 1 1/2 hrs early to be seen & treated. When there I waited in the lobby 20 minutes and was treated rudely by the dental assistant, once seated, the dr didn't say a word to me, he just began with a needle to anesthetize me- which startled me as I thought a topical anesthetic was common practice before that. He laughed at me, placed topical on the outside of my gum, and then used the needle, without topical, on the inside of my gum and hit a nerve in my jaw that shot such a severe pain through me it felt like a 9 on the pain scale. I still have no feeling in half my tongue (29 hours later), and am worried that he damaged a nerve. While he was waiting for it to kick in, he pulled the tooth of someone in the next room, and with brute force yanked the top of my tooth off, leaving the roots in my gum, causing more digging and damage than necessary. I had a different tooth removed the week prior by Dr. Donald Wells in Hillsboro and the bleeding stopped before I left the office. I bled for 5 hours after seeing Dr. Kooning, awful experience!

6 years ago (2005), I needed a tooth implant for my upper lateral incisor #7 which was suddenly lost through dental malpractice by Kaiser Permanente HMO.
I called every implant specialist I could find using a Portland area phonebook and Dr. Jan Kooning was the only oral surgeon who offered FREE consultation and a low flat-rate of $1200 for implants, which was considerably less than any other area specialist I had talked to.
What was quoted was what I paid, no hidden costs, exam charges or X-ray fees, the $1200 was all inclusive and consisted of 1 appt for an initial consult, 1 appt for x-rays and Q&A and 1 appt for the surgery, which all went smooth.
Jan Kooning is so comfortable in his role that he put me at quickly at ease, especially since I have a blood phobia. Jan was so knowledge and assuaged my fears by explaining each step he would be doing. By the time I was in the chair, Jan had me so relaxed I required only local anesthesia!
Jan had a couple dental students from OHSU watching the surgery, which I did not expect and felt my privacy was invaded a little by the extra eyes. The surgery took about 20 minutes and went flawless.
The implant is still as perfect today as the day when Jan installed it all those years ago! :)

I had 5 extractions this procedure. I was in severe pain upon coming into this office. Insurance help was flawless. Chair-side manner was 100% excellent. Hygienist was the best ever and front desk was totally the best ever. I've had severe dental anxiety for years and Dr. Kooning and his staff are simply awesome. VERY highly recommended Oral Surgeon.

No actual procedure performed yet, but impressed with with the evaluation (and definitely plan to use him should I elect to have the procedure preformed). The office may seem a bit run down from the outside, but very well kept inside. His staff was friendly and professional. He patiently answered all of my questions (I usually have a lot) and sent me away with information to take home. I was a bit wary at first because I was referred there from a dental discount plan, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the referral.

I have the biggest fear of dentistry. He pulled my tooth and I felt nothing. He was very patient with me and my anxiety. He was very nice and relaxed my nerves the best he could.
