This code is used to report the first 30 minutes of intravenous conscious sedation/analgesia services (in which the patient is capable of maintaining their own airway—breathing on their own). The time begins when the medication is administered and monitoring of the patient is begun. The service is considered complete when the doctor or anesthetist may safely transfer supervision of the patient to trained personnel. If the procedure requires intravenous sedation lasting longer than 30 minutes, D9242 will also be billed.
