According to two other dentist I have spoken to this is just not true unless you have a severe allergy to the metals or mercury.
I was recently told I need a root canal and crown (approx $2000.00)
All the tooth needed was a filling (100.00) and now that tooth and the rest of them metal fillings and all are just fine.
Not saying he is not a good dentist, he seemed to do good work, just watch for un-nessary work, thats all I am saying folks...
