i am a new patient with Dr Yu, i recently went there for a check up and cleaning in December 2011 before the year end. Dr Yu provided a very clear treatment plan, and i definitely continue go back for my other treatment. Very nice dentist, excellent job with modern design office, and hi-tech dental equipments. Last but not least, excellent location in downtown San franisco.

Dr. Yu is my No. 1 dentist. My family and I visit him two times a year for cleaning and exam, he never asks you to do extra treatment if you do not need to. Plus, he spends time to sit with me and explain the treatment procedures with models and pictures in a simple manner. His office has the coolest x-ray machine that I have ever seen; it takes less than a minute, the x-ray of my teeth shows in the computer screen!! Professional, care and gentle!!

Dr. James Yu is our family dentist for more than 15 years. We are very happy with his professional service and high business ethics. He performs regular check-ups and provides prompt cavities treatment. He keeps himself up to date on latest dentist technologies. We are impressed with the new dental equipment. He is patient. Our 9-year old daughter never fears to see him. He cares about patients. Multiple times, he used weekend time to let us squeeze in to receive urgent dental care. I would strongly recommend his service.

AVOID AT ALL COST!
He screwed over my teeth. I've been going to him twice a year for dental cleanings. I actually do not avoid the dentist because I know how important it is to have good oral hygiene. I didn't like him because he was never on time for appointments (always at least half hour late and made patients wait) and I finally decided to switch dentists.
So I go to my new dentist who explains to me that I have 8 cavities sitting in my mouth and that they have been there for years! What excuse does Dr. Yu have for not telling me about my EIGHT cavities? I'm sure they didn't just pop up in the last six months since my last cleaning at his office.
He is an older dentist and is not keeping up with the latest technologies or standard dental practices. If you don't want to discover a mouthful of cavities even though you go to dentist all the time, do not give him business. Do not visit him and switch your dentist if you are seeing him. He is bad news.

My family has been going to Dr Yu at his Union Square office for over 20 years. He's a great dentist. I have absolute confidence in his care, and would recommend him to anyone.
He is very friendly, unpretentious, and communicates well. Be prepared to listen to his stories of his travels and opinions on local politics and news (I think he does it to keep my mind off the procedure). A very interesting and thoughtful guy. He definitetly is personally interested in you and your dental health. He even does his own cleaning. He has very high ethical standards, and his team really helps out with the insurance processing.
The bells from the O'Farrell street cable car out his window also really help with the stress and anxiety!

I live in tucson, but return to Dr. Yu for my dental care. he was my dentist for years before i moved to tucson. HE IS THE VERY BEST; HE IS MY DENTIST AND MY FRIEND. HE GOES TO OTHER COUNTRIES AND DOES DENTAL WORK FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE POOR AND CAN NOT AFFORD DENTAL CARE OR CANNOT REACH A DENTIST SINCE THERE IS NOT ONE IN THEIR LOCALE. DR. Positives:
Dr. Yu is a very energetic and caring dentist. He is professional and always thinks for his patients. Your teeth are under good care under Dr. Yu, because he cares about them more than you do.
I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth that were causing problems. Dr. Yu did not hesitate to provide the best and reasonably cost treatment method to help alleviate my problem. He set up appointments for me to periodically monitor the healing process after I had the teeth extracted. The facility is average: it has all the essentials but nothing cutting edge.
Negatives:
The building itself requires a lot of fixes and maintenance. This is not Dr. Yu's fault but his landlord's. The building maintenence and fixes have gone on over a year but the landlord is delaying finishing them up because of cost overrun. If you go to Dr. Yu's do not expect a 5-star hotel building, because some walls are covered with papers.

Dr Yu was a very friendly dentist who's personality put me at ease during treatment. The assistants acted very professionally and were able to fit me in at late notice.The dentistry is in a convenient and central location only a few minutes walk from the BART station. I would recommend him to anyone in the Bay Area.
