I've been Dr. Herbst's patient for over twenty two years and have had three root canals by him and my husband is also a patient. He had Dr. Herbst retreat a root canal that another dentist performed. We both agree that Dr. Herbst is incredibly knowledgeable and able to perform root canals without us feeling anything. My general dentist has complimented Dr. Herbst's root canals on my check up x-rays. He says that they are textbook and Dr Herbst fills the canals all the way to the tips. That makes me feel good to know that I can trust Dr. Herbst's root canals. He has moved offices from Forest Glen to Laurel. I've been to both offices. I feel comfortable knowing Dr. Herbst will let me know what is needed because he is very good at diagnosing where my problem tooth is. For example I've recently had a visit where Dr. Herbst's has told me that what I was experiencing was not root canal and was a gum issue. He looked up gum specialists for me and helped me to get an appointment with him. He will call to check on how I'm doing after I see him. I wish my other doctors were as nice to follow-up.

1 star. Called Dr. Herbst when I was in a LOT of pain on a Saturday morning. Kind of strange that he answered the phone himself, but was very amiable. He offered to meet me at one of his offices to do a root canal, which was admirable. When I started to ask his front desk person, Karen, about cost and my insurance coverage, Dr. Herbst took over the conversation and stated it sounded like I was "testing the waters" to determine prices. I said money was always important (some endodontists in the area charge $2000 to $3000 for root canal treatments), but that wasn't the case. He interrupted and said "good luck, have a good life" and disconnected the call. He's been in practice close to 40 years, so maybe it is time to retire! Altogether, his lack of professionalism was off-putting, no matter how skilled he may truly be.
About Front Desk: Sounds like a one-man-show with minimally qualified staff (perhaps Karen is the only office person).

Dr. Herbst is the best endodontist I have seen (he is my third). He enjoys answering all my questions and is good at explaining the procedures he uses. He did an excellent job with my root canal, all the time paying attention to my comfort as well. He is kind, caring, and has a gentle humor, all of which helped me be confident that I had made a great choice when I called his office. I started telling other people about Dr. Herbst and was pleased to find that many knew of him and said they admired him personally and professionally.

Dr Joe Herbst is amazing! If you are in need of a dreaded root canal, I'd highly recommend seeing Dr. Herbst. He will take all of your pain away and he'll make you laugh along the way. My general dentist glowingly endorsed and referred me to Dr. Herbst last Monday and I must say I didn't know what to expect but after going through with it, I am equally impressed! I had taken off work on Monday and was hoping to be seen by him right away. Dr. Herbst's receptionist was extremely caring and got me an appointment with him on emergency for Monday afternoon. Dr Herbst listened to me and performed an examination and explained what he thought needed to be done and then asked me if I wanted to get started. I was super nervous about having a root canal but felt Dr Herbst was an expert and had the root canal performed by him. After the procedure, Dr. Herbst took the time to sit with me and explain the after-care. He wrote down instructions on what I should do and told me to go home rest and have a good meal. I really felt like he went above and beyond when he asked me to call him the next day to tell him how I was feeling :) My goodness he was so nice. If you ever need a root canal, take my advice and see Dr. Herbst. He is great!

The best dentist I've ever seen. I have a tremendous fear of dentists. Many have refused to treat me and have referred me to offices that administer nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") to calm my anxiety. My husband had been treated by Dr. Herbst and told me he was a great endodontist. So, I drove to Dr. Herbst's office in Laurel from my home in McLean, VA. The trip was well worth it. I was thrilled with his skill. He has large hands that work smoothly and skillfully. But, most important to me, was that he was gentle and soothing. I wasn't at all afraid. I left happy. My tooth never hurt. And, the next day, I was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from his receptionist Karen who asked how I was doing. A few days later I heard from Dr. Herbst himself. I would recommend Dr. Herbst to everyone who has a painful toothache or who knows that they need root canal surgery. If you have fear of the pain that can be caused by dental surgery, he's definitely the right choice.

Dr. Herbst is a true find! He came highly recommended and after going to him I can see why. I awoke on a Saturday morning with a lot of discomfort in my back molar, my regular dentist referred me to Dr. Herbst (he is a root canal specialist). Dr. Herbst was able to see me on emergency in his office (on a Saturday!) . Karen, his office manager made me feel at ease and Dr. Herbst has a very kind and gentle manner. As far as the root canal, it was a breeze! I mean I didn't feel any pain at all. It felt similar to getting a filling. To top it all off, Dr. Herbst asked me to call him and let him know how I was doing the next day (a Sunday!). I will surely go back to him if I ever need any other future treatments and will join in and highly recommend him. (I never thought I would feel this way after having a root canal! lol)

Dr. H is excellent and put me at ease. I was in a lot of pain before seeing him (and after treatment by another dentist) and after being treated by him, I've been pain free (and very happy).
He was written up in the Washingtonian magazine as one of the best endodontists in the DC and came highly recommended by my dad. I think you owe it to yourself to get the best possible treatment available by going to Dr. Herbst.
