Read Reviews for Dr. Charles Spitz
My daughter just returned from her first visit with Dr. Spitz. She *loved* it! I was a bit worried before the visit as I was told they would be doing full xrays. Uh oh. My kid has such a strong gag reflex that she's been known to vomit on cue when the tongue depressor comes near her! Her previous dentist was never able to get more than a single partially xrayed tooth due to her gaggy nature. But at Dr. Spitz's office, Joan made the process enjoyable! WHAT?! My daughter was given breathing tricks and information that helped her relax, I got to hear the fun story about how Joan ran around the corner super fast to take the xray so my daughter would not have to breath slowly for long. Rather than coming home with horror stories, it was all about how nice every one was and about how fun the visit was. They got every last xray done! She had fun learning about how to brush better and seeing all the plaque on her teeth. She was so excited to talk about the trip (my husband took her so I heard about it afterward) telling me all about how the office was like a space ship, and even how they turned the water on was cool. I would not dream of changing dentists after just this first trip! Daughter reported not only that it was fun but was the

My now 25 year old son had gone to Dr. Spitz since he was 5 and when he turned 18 he didn't want to stop going to Dr. Spitz. He went until he was 19 and decided when he was the only HUGE kid in the waiting room it was time to move on. :~)
Now he has a son who is almost 3 and wants to take him there too.
BTW - my son never had a cavity until he was 18. Thanks Dr. Spitz & staff.

We were patients of Dr. Spitz when one of my sons, then 14 mths, fell and broke his front teeth in half horizontally. Dr. Spitz said "Oh they're not fully erupted." They were broken in half!
He then told me that breastfeeding had caused "baby bottle mouth." Firstly, that term was discontinued b/c they now know that the Strep Mutans bacteria cause "Early Childhood Caries." Spitz should have known that. Secondly, as I told Dr. Spitz, breastfeeding does not cause decay. If it did, all of the mammals around the world would be toothless.
I left and found a dentist who immediately recognized that my son's teeth were broken and the dentin had broken off. He needed 4 extractions and they were abscessing - had I stayed with Dr. Spitz and relied upon his word, my son would have endured the pain of four full abscesses.
For a mainstream office they are pleasant, efficient, nice. I found them behind the times regarding cavities and fluoride (it inhibits absorption of vit D, and kids with caries need the vit D).

Our experience was...
For years, my sons 6 month check-ups showed no cavities, according to Dr. Spitz. When we switched over to another dentist, we brought our sons x-rays from Dr. Spitz office. Right away the new dentist said there were 5 cavities visible on the Dr. Spitz x-ray. When I called Dr. Spitz' office to ask about their explanation for the 5 cavities shown on my sons X-ray they had performed, they explained Dr. Spitz did not look at all the x-rays taken.

While I think they have great staff that show the kids how to brush, etc. the experience is not all sunshine:
- The "central" room where drilling takes place is open so that there are multiple chairs in one place. That means that my children who have never had a dental issue (ages 12/9/5) walk in feeling fine and listen to curdling screams by kids, tears, drilling ,etc. Very distracting and stressful for kids.
- I have had two friends that went there and switched out when they had a dental serious issue for their kids (one had a very seriously chipped tooth that needed cosmetic and medical work, the other had other issues) -- there was little patience or understanding with either child and much condescending talk, the scheduling was a nightmare so that there would be huge windows of time in between appointments even though they were both very serious in nature. The one with the chipped tooth did not have a good result at all -- tooth broke within months and they were facing having to do the process all over again.
I just called to get records transferred and they were hideously rude to me and obnoxious. I said nothing other than "i would like records transferred" and I got nothing but attitude.
Rethink this.

Dr Spitz and his staff are incredible. They have always made my sons feel great- they always ask me when they get to go back to see him. Besides being a perfectionist he's charming and funny, too. Even his waiting room and office decor are fun. We even come to him from Sunnyvale.
